The place
The grid squares and the centre, from Campbell Park and Central Milton Keynes out through Shenley, Furzton, Westcroft, Broughton and the rest, plus the towns that were here first: Bletchley, Wolverton, Stony Stratford, New Bradwell and Woburn Sands, with Newport Pagnell to the north east. Around 240,000 people live in the council’s area now, and it was granted city status in 2022. It is still growing, which is why so much of what we cover starts life as a planning application.
One council for everything
Milton Keynes has been a unitary authority since 1997, so there is no county council in the middle. Planning, waste, highways, licensing, council tax, schools and social care are all the same body’s responsibility. That makes its committee papers and registers the most direct record of what is going to change here, and it means nobody can pass the blame sideways.
What we work from
The council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Great Ouse and the Ouzel, and company filings in The Gazette. Every fact carries a link to the original, and where a record is unclear we say it is unclear rather than guessing.
